The Thistle is the National Flower of Scotland and has been an important symbol of Scotland for over 500 years.
Legend has it that an invading party was trying to make a sneak attack at night, so they removed their footwear to be as quiet as possible. One of them trod on the extremely sharp thorns of the thistle, cried out in pain, and woke the sleeping Scots. The Scots were saved and all because of the thorny thistle!
When you know the attributes of the thistle, you realize why the Scots choose it as a National Symbol. While it has a beautiful delicate flower head, it is vicious, stubborn, and has an ability to "survive and thrive" against the odds.
