Celtic Crosses have been carved in stone for many centuries with some of the oldest surviving crosses dating back to the 8th century. They are one of the oldest Christian symbols in Ireland and are usually richly decorated free-standing high crosses (some of them as tall as 21 feet).
Some say St. Patrick himself (the patron saint of Ireland) created the Celtic Cross in Ireland when he came across some pagans worshiping an image of the Sun God (a stone circle). He is said to have drawn the image of a simple cross across the middle of the stone circle, likening the importance of the Christian God with the importance of the Sun God.
Others say the stone circle through the arms, is there to provide support for the heavy stone arms.
