All you need now to sound like a native is a little bit of practice and to pronounce this instrument properly. It does not pronounce like it looks (we can't make things too easy for you guys!) Bodhrán = BowRawn, Bow (as in take a bow after your preformance) Rawn.
The Bodhrán is a traditional Irish hand-held drum which has ‘played’ an important role in Irish music for hundreds and hundreds of years. In fact it predates Christianity in Ireland. The drum is a round wooden frame across which a goat skin was attached. It was most likely used as a tool at first, perhaps a Winnowing basket (to separate wheat kernels from their hulls), until it was discovered that when turned over and tapped, it sounded quite nice. Us Irish love a bit of craic (fun), and will use anything at hand to make a bit of music when given half a chance!
This Bodhrán depicts a Celtic Cross with a Trinity Knot on each arm and a Celtic Knot within the circle. The Knots are in red with a yellow background.
