Quaiches have a long history in Scotland.  Nowadays they are used as a toasting cup for Celebrations, or as a Cup of Welcome or Farewell.  Quite different from the role they once held as Peace Makers.

Once upon a time when warring tribes wanted peace between them, they would often have a wedding.  Once the two tribes are united as one, its just not right to keep on killing each other!

As part of the wedding ceremony, the host party would drink from the quaich first, to show it is not poisoned, while holding it with both handles, so he could not hold a weapon.  It was then passed to the guest party to drink from it holding it with both hands and not holding a weapon. This custom made the quaich part of a lot of Scottish Weddings, even nowadays, when they are not all killing each other!

The main design on this Quaich is a Rampant Lion, which adorns the Royal Flag of Scotland. The handles of this Quaich are decorated with Trinity Knots.

This wee Quaich is smaller than would have normally been used, as it is not big enough to get a decent drink, but is a delightful part of Scottish history.  By the way, we have larger quaichs in stock!

Design features of this Pewter Quaich are:

  • Made in Scotland
  • Quaich measures appox. 3" including handles
  • Bowl Measures approx. 2"
  • Gift Boxed
