Long ago in Scotland, when they were trying to bring peace to between two warring clans (families) they would often have a wedding (you can’t kill each other anymore because you are all related!)

The host party would hold the Quaich with both handles or “Lugs” (so they couldn’t hold a weapon!) and drink from it first, to show that it wasn’t poisoned.  And because the peace was often brought about by having a wedding, the Quaich became part of the Scottish Wedding Traditions.  Nowadays (now that they are not all killing each other), the Quaich is generally used for toasting of happy occasions such as weddings, christenings, celebrations, etc or as a Cup of Welcome (or Farewell).

Quaich comes from the Gaelic Work “Cuach” which means shallow cup. The Quaich was originally made from wood or horn.

The main design on this Quiach is a central Celtic Knot and edged with another Celtic Knot.  The handles of this Quaich are decorated with Trinity Knots.

This wee Quaich is smaller than would have normally been used, as it is not big enough to get a decent drink, but is a delightful part of Scottish history.  By the way, we have larger quaichs in stock!

Design features of this Pewter Quaich are:

  • Made in Scotland
  • Quaich measures approx. 3" including handles
  • Bowl Measures approx. 2"
  • Gift Boxed
