This adorable Highland Cow (or Hairy Coo, as they say in Scotland), is pictured in the Scottish Highlands, with a loch (lake), and a castle, in the background.

The Highland Cow has long horns, and a distinctive shaggy coat. The long hair is not just pretty, it gives the cows the ability to survive in harsh climates, such as the Scottish Highlands.  This is an ancient breed, thriving in Scotland for centuries, and has a written record of them from the 6th century (but they are probably a much older breed than that)!

While the most iconic color today is red, they were originally more common in black (but can also be found in many other colors such as yellow, white, brown, etc).  Apparently Queen Victoria said that she preferred the red color, and so that became the most popular color of Highland Cow! I prefer Red too, but I’m sure they are adorable whatever color they are!

An example of Ogham

Dating to to about 600 AD, we photographed this Ogham stone in Kilmalkedar Church, on the Dingle peninsular, in Co. Kerry. on our last trip to Ireland. The ogham carving reads "ẠṆM MẠỊLE-INBIR/ MACI BROCANN" - "Name of Máel-Inbher son of Broccán"
